Is there a free IDM alternative without ads?
Yes — that's exactly where PDM fits. It's free for both personal and commercial use during early access, and it carries no ads, no analytics, and no telemetry. The only times PDM contacts its own servers are to validate a license (if you activate one) and to check for updates. There's no account to create and nothing to sign into.
Does PDM support Firefox like IDM?
Not yet. PDM's browser extension works in Chrome, Edge, and Brave today, and a Firefox port is on the roadmap but not available. IDM does integrate with Firefox, so if Firefox is your main browser, that's one area where IDM is currently ahead. If you use a Chromium-based browser, PDM's "Download with PDM" right-click capture and optional auto-intercept cover the same workflow.
Is PDM a safe IDM alternative?
PDM collects no telemetry and shows no ads, and every update is ECDSA-signed and SHA-256 verified before it installs. One honest caveat: the installer itself isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show a "Windows protected your PC" prompt the first time you run it — click More info → Run anyway to continue. A code-signing certificate is the permanent fix and is planned. See the download section for the full note and the published SHA-256 checksums.
Who should still choose IDM?
We'd rather be honest than oversell. IDM is a mature product with a long track record, and there are real reasons to stay with it: you rely on Firefox integration, you want a code-signed installer with no SmartScreen prompt today, or you depend on IDM's established ecosystem and site-specific handling. PDM is a strong fit if you want those core multi-connection speed and resume features for free, with a modern Windows 10/11 interface and no ads or telemetry — and you're comfortable with a younger product that's still filling in a few gaps like Firefox support and installer signing.
